A Weekend Road Trip to Taif: Saudi Arabia's City of Roses

Just a two-hour drive from Makkah and three hours from Jeddah, Taif is the perfect cool-climate escape for a long weekend.

Perched at 1,800 metres in the Hejaz Mountains, Taif enjoys a climate that most Saudi cities can only dream of — mild summers, cool evenings, and occasional winter frost. It's less than two hours from Makkah and three hours from Jeddah, making it the most accessible mountain escape in the western Kingdom.

Getting There

The main access road is Route 15, which winds up the Hada Mountain escarpment. This is one of the most scenic drives in Saudi Arabia, with hairpin bends, sheer drops, and sweeping views over the Tihamah coastal plain far below. Take it slow and enjoy the drive.

Rose Season (March to April)

Taif's famous Damask roses bloom between March and April, transforming the hillside farms into seas of pink and red. The annual Rose Festival attracts visitors from across the Kingdom. Rosewater and rose oil produced here are among the finest in the world.

Where to Stay

Taif has several excellent hotels in the Al-Hada and Al-Shafa mountain districts. Booking a hotel with a mountain-view terrace turns the experience from a day trip into a proper escape.

What to See

  • Shubra Palace Museum — a beautifully restored Italianate royal palace turned national museum
  • Al-Shafa Cable Car — aerial views over the mountain valleys
  • Al-Rudaf Park — sprawling green parkland unusual by Saudi standards
  • Souq Al-Zail — Taif's traditional market, strong on honey and local produce

Recommended Rental Vehicle

Any sedan or small SUV handles the Taif road well. A 4x4 opens up the unpaved mountain tracks between Al-Hada and Al-Shafa for more adventurous drivers.
