Exploring AlUla: The Complete Road Trip Guide

Towering sandstone canyons, 2,000-year-old Nabataean tombs, and starlit desert skies — AlUla is unlike anywhere else on earth.

AlUla has transformed from a little-known oasis town into one of the most talked-about travel destinations on earth. The UNESCO World Heritage Site of Hegra (ancient Mada'in Saleh), the surreal rock formations of Elephant Rock and the Window Rock, and the preserved mud-brick old town make this a destination that demands at least three days of your time.

Getting to AlUla

AlUla has its own international airport (Prince Abdul Majeed bin Abdulaziz Airport) with direct flights from Riyadh, Jeddah, and some international cities. Alternatively, driving from Medina takes approximately three hours through spectacular desert landscapes — a road trip in its own right.

Recommended Vehicle

A 4x4 SUV is highly recommended for AlUla. While the main heritage sites are accessible on paved roads, many of the most dramatic viewpoints and off-the-beaten-track locations require a capable off-road vehicle. Enterprise's Riyadh, Jeddah, and AlUla Airport locations all stock full-size 4x4 SUVs.

What to See

  • Hegra — 111 Nabataean tombs carved from rose-red sandstone, comparable to Petra in Jordan
  • Elephant Rock — a natural 52-metre rock formation that bears an uncanny resemblance to a walking elephant
  • Dadan Archaeological Site — 3,000-year-old ancient city ruins above the AlUla valley floor
  • Old Town AlUla — preserved 13th-century mud-brick village with 400+ houses

Best Time to Visit

October through April offers the best conditions — warm days and cool evenings. Summer temperatures can exceed 40°C. The Winter at Tantora cultural season (November to March) brings world-class concerts, hot air balloons, and stargazing events to the site.
